Year 5 Production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Year 5 put on a fantastic, immersive performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Rather than sitting at a desk and learning about Shakespeare off the page, the girls have had the opportunity to dive into the story, become all of the different characters and learn, week by week, the fate of each character.

The adaptation used choral speech and relied on the girls working as an ensemble cast, intertwined at all times. Year 5 loved calling upon the audience and immersing parents and staff in the production.

On Tuesday 19 March, Year 5 performed their production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to Years 4 and 6. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is a comedy play set in Athens, consisting of several subplots that revolve around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. One subplot involves a conflict among four entangled Athenian lovers.

The production was fantastic and was filled with humour (which made the audience laugh), beautiful singing, live instrumental music, amazing magical costumes and makeup, and finally, fun audience participation during the beginning and the end of the production. The end participation being that all of the cast took someone from the audience to be their partner and danced with them in the middle of the stage.

In addition to this, the production was set in the middle of the audience – the audience was sitting on opposite ends of the school hall – making all of the acting happen right in front of the audience and making it feel like an immersive experience, as well as making the audience feel as if they were in the play itself.

Thank you to Year 5 for putting on their best acting skills in the play, and a massive thank you to Mrs Fife (the new Head of Drama here at Ken Prep) for making the Year 5 production come to life, it was such a pleasure to watch!
