Kensington Prep School has a thriving Music department with all year groups having weekly Music lessons in which aspects of singing, performing, composing, listening, notation and theory are studied.

The Kodaly approach is used in the teaching of Music at Ken Prep, through singing and musical games, and is underpinned by the belief that music is for all.

As well as having weekly Music lessons, there are many opportunities for girls to join a variety of music groups and ensembles. We operate an inclusive culture, and girls are encouraged to participate.

From Year 2 onwards, girls can receive individual instrumental tuition from one of our 13 visiting teachers. These instruments include: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp, Guitar, Drums, Recorder, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Cornet, Trombone, Piano, Singing and Music Theory. There are presently over 250 music lessons taking place each week. Last year, over 140 girls took ABRSM Music Examinations. The levels being achieved range from Grade One through to Grade Eight.

The Year 6 girls regularly obtain music scholarships to secondary schools including Godolphin and Latymer, Francis Holland, Putney High, Wycombe Abbey and the City of London.

Regular musical performances take place throughout the school year, including the annual Christmas Carol Service, Spring and Summer Concerts and Carol Singing at Farm Lane Care Home.

Pupils' achievements in Music are excellent. They benefit from a wealth of opportunities to sing or play an instrument and regularly participate in many ensembles and performances.
