Black History Month Author Visits

As part of our Black History Month celebrations, girls across the school enjoyed talks from authors Dinah Orji and Kamapala Chukwuka.

Kamapala Chukwuka for Reception and Year 1

Author Kamapala Chukwuka visited Reception and Year 1 to share her story ‘Kind Obi’. The workshop began by exploring the word ‘diversity’ before we moved on to thinking about how we can spread kindness throughout our day.

After listening to the story we all pledged to do at least one kind thing every day for the next week. Each girl brought home her own ‘Kindness Journal’ to fill in and we look forward to hearing all about the wave of kindness that Reception and Year 1 are going to create!

Dinah Orji (author), presenting to the Changemakers.

Dinah Orji for Years 2 to 6

Dinah Orji, author of ‘Children of the Benin Kingdom’ visited Ken Prep to share her book and her rich heritage.

The Changemakers were lucky to meet with Dinah first and she answered a number of thought-provoking questions which included outlining the difficulties facing Black authors and why writing books with a focus on diversity is so important.

Following this, Years 2 to 6 listened to Dinah share the inspiration for her book, which was her own childhood, and explain why she chose to write an adventure story set in Africa. She also discussed what being a changemaker means and why diversity and equality should always be at the forefront of our minds. The talk ended with several questions, once again highlighting the girls’ curious and creative minds.

Year 2 then had their own writing workshop where Dinah shared lots of author secrets and tips to help further enhance the girls’ creative writing.
