Plastic Free School Status Achieved!

We are delighted to share that Ken Prep has been awarded Plastic Free School status!

Throughout the last academic year, our Eco-Warriors (made up of girls from Reception to Year 6) completed multiple tasks to gain Plastic Free School status – a status awarded to a school when they are committed to removing single-use plastics from their school.

The first task the Eco-Warriors completed was a trash mob, this involved the girls searching the school grounds for any rubbish and then sorting the rubbish found into piles consisting of plastic, paper and other stuff. After looking through the piles, the Eco-Warriors selected the wrappers of three different companies to investigate the packing materials they used.

The second task was to challenge these companies about their packaging materials and their plans to make them more sustainable in the future. The girls also challenged the government, writing to Ken Prep’s local MP to tell him about the trash mob and asking whether there were any plans to encourage large companies to use more sustainable packaging.

The final task was to challenge Ken Prep! This required removing at least three single-use plastics from our school. The BYOB (bring your own bottle) scheme was introduced to stop the use of single-use plastic water bottles, glitter was banned and replaced with an eco-friendly substitute and in the school kitchens our catering team moved to vegeware and got rid of plastic cling film.

We are so proud of the Eco-Warriors and all of their hard work helping Ken Prep to achieve Plastic Free School status!
