Valerie Bloom, the famous Jamaican poet, visited Kensington Prep to share her humorous, and at times touching, poetry with the school.
KS1 enjoyed learning how to speak many basic words in Jamaican so they could then help Valerie by joining in with some of her poems. KS2 then had the pleasure of listening to Valerie share stories about her childhood growing up in the Caribbean and the joys and challenges she faced. There was a lot of audience participation and laughter.
Finally, in the afternoon, Valerie led a poetry writing workshop for Year 6. She shared some writing secrets and then the girls wrote kennings, where each line would be a clue to a person or object. Lots of poems were about their teachers!
We would like to thank Valerie for bringing smiles to all our faces and allowing us to celebrate her poetry and life.
